When we think about serving God, it’s easy to assume that ministry belongs to preachers, elders, Bible class teachers, or other church leaders. Yet the New Testament paints a much larger picture. God has called every believer to serve, encourage, teach, and help build up the body of Christ.

Today we’ll explore a powerful truth from Ephesians chapter four: church leaders are called to equip God's people for ministry, and every Christian has a place in God's work. Join me as we discover how God has prepared each of us to make a difference in His kingdom.

I invite you to follow our podcast and share it with others as together we walk with our Master.

Speaker

Hello friends. Welcome to Walking with Our Master. I'm your host, Dave Leighton. Whether you're starting your morning or winding down your evening, let's take a few moments to center our hearts on some thoughts about what really matters. Today we're going to talk about an important truth that sometimes gets overlooked.

Speaker

Many people think the work of ministry belongs primarily to preachers, elders, deacons, Bible class teachers, or other church leaders. We appreciate those who serve in these roles, and scripture certainly teaches that they have important responsibilities. Yet God's design for the church is much bigger than a few people doing all the work. In fact, according to Scripture, church leaders are called to equip God's people for ministry.

Speaker

Every believer has a role to play in helping others grow in Christ. Well, let's begin by looking at God's design for leadership. Listen to Paul's words in Ephesians chapter 4, verses 11 and 12. Paul says, and he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers to equip the saints for every work of ministry or building up the body of Christ. Notice what Paul does not say. He does not say that leaders are responsible for doing all the ministry themselves. Instead, Paul says their role is to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

Speaker

The word equip carries the idea of preparing, training, and supplying someone for a task. Church leaders help believers understand God's word, develop spiritually, and discover ways to serve. Think about a coach preparing a team. The coach teaches, encourages, corrects, and develops skills. But the coach is not the one playing every position on the field. The players must step onto the field and do their part. Likewise, spiritual leaders prepare God's people so they can serve effectively in God's kingdom.

Speaker

Sometimes we hear the word ministry and immediately think of a preacher standing behind the pulpit. Yet ministry simply means service. When you encourage a struggling believer, you are ministering. When you pray with someone facing a difficult trial, you are ministering. When you teach a Bible class, visit a shut in, help a new Christian, or share the gospel with a friend, you are ministering. God has given every Christian opportunities to serve.

Speaker

Paul's picture of the church is not a few workers carrying the entire load while everyone else watches. His picture is a healthy body where every member contributes, because each part matters, each believer matters, and each act of service matters. One of the beautiful truths about the church is that learning flows in many directions. Certainly we learn from elders and teachers and preachers. God has gifted them for that purpose. The scripture also teaches that Christians teach and encourage one another. Again, Paul said in Colossians 3.16, let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.

Speaker

Notice the words one another. The older Christian encourages the younger Christian. The younger Christian brings fresh enthusiasm that inspires others. And new believers ask questions that help us to think more deeply. The seasoned believer shares learned lessons through the years of walking with God. We all have something to contribute. Some of the most valuable lessons we learn do not come from a classroom. They come from conversations in church hallways, around dinner tables, during hospital visits, or while serving others. God often uses fellow believers to strengthen our faith.

Speaker

Paul continues in Ephesians 4 by describing spiritual maturity. God's goal is that believers grow into the likeness of Christ. That growth happens best within the community of faith. When we isolate ourselves, we miss opportunities to encourage and to be encouraged. We miss opportunities to teach and to be taught. And we miss opportunities to serve and to be served. We know well that the church is not a building or an organization. It is a family of believers helping one another follow Jesus. Every member contributes to the health of the body. We all have value and we all have purpose.

Speaker

Many Christians underestimate the influence they have on others. They may never preach a sermon or teach a large class or perhaps hold a formal leadership position. But a kind word, a faithful example, a thoughtful question, or a simple act of service may strengthen someone's faith for years to come. Some of the people who have influenced us were not famous speakers or even well-known leaders. They were simply faithful Christians who loved God, loved people, and quietly encouraged others to keep following Christ. Never underestimate what God can do through your example.

Speaker

Jesus spent his earthly ministry teaching his disciples, yet his goal was not simply to fill their minds with information. He was preparing them to continue his work. He equipped them, encouraged them, corrected them, and challenged them. And then he sent them out to serve. And that same pattern continues today.

Speaker

Our leaders and teachers and ministers equip us. They help us to serve in greater ways. So together we build up the body of Christ. God's plan has always been for His people to grow together. Well, let me close by saying the church, that is the body of Christ, is stronger when every believer understands that ministry is not reserved for a few leaders. God calls all of us to participate. Church leaders equip the saints.

Speaker

The saints serve. And together we grow into the likeness of Christ. Well, as we walk with our master, may we remain willing to learn from one another and encourage one another and serve alongside one another for the glory of God. Well, thanks for listening today as together we walk with our master. Please join us again next week as we continue seeking truth, growing in faith, and getting back to what really matters.
