Hello friends. Welcome to Walking with Our Master. I'm your host, Dave Leighton. Whether you're starting your morning or winding down your evening, let's take a few moments to center our hearts on some thoughts about what really matters. Have you ever stopped to consider where your steps are leading? Not just your plans for the day or your goals for the future, but the path your life is tracing over time. Every decision, every word, every response leaves a footprint. Well, the question is simple yet deeply personal. Whose footsteps are we following? Well, today we turn our hearts towards a beloved hymn that invites us to walk a sacred path, a path marked not by ease, but by purpose, a path already walked by our Savior. In this episode, we reflect on the timeless hymn, Footprints of Jesus. This hymn calls us to a life of intentional discipleship, where each step we take follows the example of Christ. Footprints of Jesus was written in 1879 by Mary Slade, with music composed by Asa Hull. It emerged during a time when gospel hymns were being used not only in worship, but also in evangelistic gatherings and revival meetings across America. These hymns were designed to be simple, memorable, and deeply personal. They invited people to reflect and respond. Well, this particular hymn quickly resignated with believers because of its clear and compelling imagery. The idea of following in the actual footsteps of Jesus made discipleship real. It brought a call to Christ out of abstraction and into daily life. Well, the hymn begins with a gentle yet powerful invitation. Sweetly, Lord, have we heard thee calling? Come, follow me. There is a tenderness in that call. It's personal and it's relational. Jesus invites us into a walk, not just a belief. A walk is a way of living by which we become known. So as we walk with Jesus, we become identified with him. The chorus reinforces the central image. Footprints of Jesus that make the pathway glow. We will follow the steps of Jesus wherever they go. His footsteps illuminate the way forward. When we follow Him, we walk with clarity and purpose. This truth is anchored in Scripture. In 1 Peter chapter 2, verse 21, Peter states, For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. Christ provided instruction and example as he shows us how to live, how to love, and how to be faithful. At its core, footprints of Jesus delivers a simple and enduring message. Discipleship is a daily walk of following Christ's example in every area of life. And this hymn reminds us that faith is active. It moves, it steps forward, and it follows. The verse traces the path of Jesus along the shores where he called his disciples into places of teaching and worship, among people in need of compassion, and ultimately toward sacrifice. Each step reveals a life fully surrendered to the will of the Father. The message to us is clear. We are invited to walk that same path, guided by his example. None of us walk this path alone. We walk it together as we encourage each other. And we have our Master as an example. Jesus walked where people needed hope. He walked into difficult conversations, and he walked in obedience, even when the path led to sacrifice. Walking in the footprints of Jesus is about direction. Every step we take can reflect his character. Each moment can align with his purpose, and his path leads us towards humility, compassion, and obedience. So today, let's be mindful of where we step. Today, let us be mindful of where we step as we move through our day. Let us pause and ask, am I walking in his footsteps right now? Look for one opportunity to follow his example. Offer encouragement and kindness. Those simple steps, taken faithfully, reflect a life walking with Christ. You know the beauty of this hymn is its clarity. The path has been marked. The example has been given, and our master invites us to walk with him. Well, thanks for listening today as together we walk with our master. Please join us again next week as we continue seeking truth, growing in faith, and getting back to what really matters.
